Greek\, attendees will learn more about the chapel\, which was designed by Maginnis and Walsh and opened in 1924. SUMMARY:Site Tour: House of the Temple Headquarters for the Scottish Rite Freemasonry
DESCRIPTION:The House of the Temple is the headquarters for the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry\, one of the largest Masonic Organizations in the Country. The House of the Temple was built in 1915 by acclaimed architect John Russell Pope and is one of the Neoclassical gems of DC Architecture. The 90 minute tour will showcase the main ceremonial rooms\, artifacts from Masonic and American History as well as the main library which was the first library open to the public in DC and contains over 200\,000 volumes. Photography and questions are welcome and encouraged. \nThe ticket price for this tour is $20 for general public and $15 for DCPL members. SUMMARY:Site Visit: Shrine of the Sacred Heart
DESCRIPTION:Join the DC Preservation League for a tour of the Shrine of the Sacred Heart\, home of DC’s newest interior designation. In February 2026\, the DC Historic Preservation Review Board approved DCPL’s landmark nomination amendment\, which protects the church’s interior sanctuary (the exterior was already designated). The 1922 church was designed by Frederick V. Murphy of Murphy & Olmsted (with Maginnis & Walsh as associate architects) in a Northern Italian Romanesque Revival and Byzantine-Romanesque style. The church’s interior sanctuary features concrete mosaics and murals\, which are the work of “architectural sculptor” John J. Earley — who lived nearby in Mount Pleasant. \nThe ticket price for this tour is $20 for general public and $15 for DCPL members. SUMMARY:Webinar: DC Preservation Atlas Reveal
DESCRIPTION:The National Preservation Atlas (NPA) is building the first online repository of the country’s historic places and the legal protections they receive. By making preservation data more accessible\, it aims to deepen public engagement with our shared histories and encourage their protection. \nThis webinar uncovers new insights about Washington\, DC’s 800+ historic places\, now searchable on the National Preservation Atlas interactive map. With federal preservation protections on the chopping block\, few places have more at stake than DC\, where the NPA has found that a full 29% of city land carries some form of historic designation. Attendees will learn how to get the most out of the NPA’s data tools\, examine the spatial impact of historic designation across the city\, and understand the regulations and incentives currently safeguarding these properties. The webinar will also cover how DC’s historic sites (and those in neighboring Virginia) may be affected by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation’s proposal to gut Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nREGISTER HERE

DESCRIPTION:Join the DC Preservation League for a webinar tracing the full arc of Washington\, DC’s roller skating history\, from the city’s earliest indoor rinks in the late 1800s\, through the segregated skating venues that defined the sport for decades\, to the vibrant parallel skating culture Black Washingtonians built and sustained across generations. The presentation begins with the Anacostia Park Skating Pavilion\, marking its 50th year this summer as a current cornerstone of DC skate culture\, facing new pressures from nearby development and long-term neglect. \nPresented by native Washingtonian\, roller skate historian\, and National African American Roller Skating Archive (NAARSA) curator Tasha Klusmann\, this session draws on decades of archival research\, oral histories\, and firsthand experience as a performance skater to show what roller skating has meant to DC residents for over a century\, and what’s been lost since the city’s last dedicated indoor rink closed in the late 1980s. \nThis is more than a history talk. It’s a call to action: DC deserves a city-built\, world-class indoor roller rink\, open to all residents regardless of income\, that preserves this history while building something new for the generations to come. \nThe event is free and open to the public. \nREGISTER HERE
