The tour will begin in the newly renovated Visitor Center\, which features an exhibition on the history and past occupants of the home. Visitors will also explore four period rooms\, which demonstrate both private and public living spaces. The Federal period dining room was just updated this winter and features new\, period accurate wallpaper and a dinnerware set once owned by Eliza Custis Law. \nAbout The NSCDA: The National Society of the Colonial Dames of American (NSCDA)\, a women’s non-profit organization founded in 1891\, actively promotes our national heritage through historic preservation\, patriotic service\, and educational projects. The NSCDA purchased Dumbarton House in 1928 to serve as its national headquarters and for use as an historic house museum. Under the direction of architectural historian Fiske Kimball and architect Horace Peaslee\, Dumbarton House (ca. 1799) was restored to its Federal period appearance (1790-1830). These often-unseen spaces ultimately became centers of African American community and resilience. Despite congressional intervention to halt alleyway construction\, the city had over 3\,300 alleyway dwellings by 1912. Additionally\, many city residents used alleyways for stables\, garages\, and warehouses. In the 1930s\, alleyways were once again targeted – this time by the Alley Dwelling Authority – which resulted in the displacement of Washingtonians and the loss of historic fabric. Luckily\, thanks to grassroots activism and changing views on alleyways\, many alley buildings and structures were saved from demolition in the postwar era. These unique structures have since been preserved and rehabilitated. She will demonstrate how historic preservation and older housing can play a key role in helping to alleviate the affordable housing crisis. \nSign up here to receive the Zoom link in your inbox!\nAlyssa Frystak is the Director of Research and Data Analytics at PlaceEconomics\, a Washington\, D.C.-based research firm specializing in the analysis of the economic impacts of historic preservation. There she is responsible for data acquisition and preparation\, methodology development\, and analysis. Alyssa is well versed in GIS\, census data\, municipal data\, as well as various other data resources. She is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, where she was the inaugural recipient of the Mencoff Family Fellowship in Historic Preservation. Her Master’s thesis\, “Small but Mighty: Combatting the Affordable Housing Crisis Through Small-Scale Historic Rehabilitation\,” examined the tools\, incentives\, and policies that help preserve and create subsidized and unsubsidized affordable housing in designated and non-designated buildings. Outside of her professional work\, Alyssa is also interested in innovative technologies and trends. Recently\, she explored the growing popularity of how a cryptocurrency wallet works\, particularly how they are transforming the way individuals manage digital transactions and investments.
