SUMMARY:Historic Department Stores of Downtown DC: Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Nowadays\, it is surprising when a common product isn’t available on the store shelf. Most grocery stores\, supermarkets\, and big box stores have a wide variety of offerings in a multitude of options – a level of convenience that the modern consumer takes for granted. Even when a brick-and-mortar store doesn’t quite have what you need\, the product can be purchased online with just a few clicks\, and delivered within a couple days or even within hours. This “one-stop shop” model that is common today in stores across America is a relatively new development for retail stores. Historically\, many retail stores had similar developments\, yet one subcategory of retail stores rose above others to push shopping’s boundaries: department stores. From phrases like “the customer is always right” to favorable return policies and the wide-scale adoption of escalators\, department stores have changed how we shop\, and department stores in DC tell a unique story about the city’s relationship with its shoppers. \nOn September 30th at 11:00 AM\, join tour guide Fontana Micucci and DCPL staff members to learn about the unique history of shopping and the architecture of department stores in Downtown DC. After the tour\, one can relax for a while by playing games such as 온라인 카지노. \nSign up here!\n  \n \nFontana Micucci is a recent graduate from American University’s Public History master’s program with a research focus in material culture and cultural history of the mid-20th century. She also holds a B.A. in History and English from Washington & Jefferson College. She has previously worked at a variety of historical nonprofits and organizations including George Washington’s Mount Vernon\, WETA\, and most recently as the DC Preservation League’s Public History Fellow. She has specialized in digital media and online engagement through her work\, aiming to engage public audiences with unique and truthful historical narratives. Her work has ranged from local DC history to international U.S. history\, all with an emphasis in using place\, objects\, and cultural memory that connect communities to one another. \n \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Understanding & Maintaining Historic Windows (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Windows are a key part of the character of a historic building\, but for a surprising number of buildings the original windows have already given way to replacements.  If historic windows survive\, what are the issues we face in trying to keep them\, and how should we evaluate a needed replacement?  Reasonable cost\, operability\, durability and energy efficiency are all typical goals. This webinar\, presented by John Sandor\, will help attendees evaluate their choices and weigh the inevitable compromises involved in both repair and replacement.  By sharpening our skills in observing windows\, perhaps we can better appreciate the richness that compatibly detailed windows\, both new and old\, can contribute. \n \nJohn Sandor has worked as an architectural historian in the Technical Preservation Services Branch of the National Park Service since 1996. He reviews rehabilitation projects seeking certification for federal tax credit and provides assistance to the users of the program and the general public on technical aspects of preservation. He previously worked as the architectural coordinator for the West Virginia State Historic Preservation Office and has experience as a preservation consultant and a carpenter. He is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University in architecture. John is a past president of the DC Preservation League and the Latrobe Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians. \nThis program is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:The Last Supper Sculpture: History & Viewing
DESCRIPTION:Image of the bas relief sculpted by Akili Ron Anderson. Photo courtesy of Joe Graf.\nDuring a building renovation in 2019\, a 20-foot-wide bas relief of Akili Ron Anderson’s reinterpretation of Leonardo Da Vinci’s The Last Supper was discovered. Upon its discovery\, the Studio Acting Conservatory (the new owner of the space) made efforts to relocate the Last Supper to the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). Although multiple constraints prevented the move\, NMAAHC repaired and restored the sculpture\, in addition to creating a 3-D rendering and accessioning it into their collection. \nJoin DCPL and the Studio Acting Conservatory for this rare behind-the-scenes look at this unique sculpture\, with a private Q & A with the artist himself\, Akili Ron Anderson. \nSign up online to attend this special event! \nSuggested donation for this event is $15.00. Please donate through the DCPL Venmo account (@DCPresLeague) or online. \n \nAkili Ron Anderson is a tenured Associate Art professor at Howard University. He built the Last Supper bas relief using concrete and a coarse type of plaster called Structo-Lite\, and modeled Jesus and the disciples on people he saw around Columbia Heights\, where he grew up. Anderson’s body of work includes public and private artworks in stained glass\, fine arts\, sculpture and other mediums. Local works include Sankofa\, at the east and west entrances of the Columbia Heights Metro Station; stained glass at Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel and the Prince George’s County Courthouse. http://www.akilironanderson.com  \nThe Studio Acting Conservatory (SAC) is the premier training institution for actors and directors in Washington\, DC. For over 45 years\, over 13\,000+ alumni have gone on to important theatre and film careers. Founded by Joy Zinoman\, and the founding organization for Studio Theatre\, the Conservatory is led by a 22-member faculty of committed professionals who teach over 600 students—of every age and background—each year. The Conservatory believes that quality actor training should be accessible to anyone\, regardless of identity\, background\, ability or socioeconomic status\, and is committed to fostering a welcoming\, inclusive and accessible environment for all.
