SUMMARY:Webinar: DC Preservation Atlas Reveal
DESCRIPTION:The National Preservation Atlas (NPA) is building the first online repository of the country’s historic places and the legal protections they receive. By making preservation data more accessible\, it aims to deepen public engagement with our shared histories and encourage their protection. \nThis webinar uncovers new insights about Washington\, DC’s 800+ historic places\, now searchable on the National Preservation Atlas interactive map. With federal preservation protections on the chopping block\, few places have more at stake than DC\, where the NPA has found that a full 29% of city land carries some form of historic designation. Attendees will learn how to get the most out of the NPA’s data tools\, examine the spatial impact of historic designation across the city\, and understand the regulations and incentives currently safeguarding these properties. The webinar will also cover how DC’s historic sites (and those in neighboring Virginia) may be affected by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation’s proposal to gut Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Webinar: DC's Roller Skate History
DESCRIPTION:Join the DC Preservation League for a webinar tracing the full arc of Washington\, DC’s roller skating history\, from the city’s earliest indoor rinks in the late 1800s\, through the segregated skating venues that defined the sport for decades\, to the vibrant parallel skating culture Black Washingtonians built and sustained across generations. The presentation begins with the Anacostia Park Skating Pavilion\, marking its 50th year this summer as a current cornerstone of DC skate culture\, facing new pressures from nearby development and long-term neglect. \nPresented by native Washingtonian\, roller skate historian\, and National African American Roller Skating Archive (NAARSA) curator Tasha Klusmann\, this session draws on decades of archival research\, oral histories\, and firsthand experience as a performance skater to show what roller skating has meant to DC residents for over a century\, and what’s been lost since the city’s last dedicated indoor rink closed in the late 1980s. \nThis is more than a history talk. It’s a call to action: DC deserves a city-built\, world-class indoor roller rink\, open to all residents regardless of income\, that preserves this history while building something new for the generations to come. \nThe event is free and open to the public. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Walking Tour: Anacostia Historic District
DESCRIPTION:The Anacostia Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978—with approximately 550 buildings comprising the historic district\, dating from 1854 to about 1930. This historic district is unique because it preserves the city’s largest and most intact collection of late-19th- and early-20th-century\, small-scale\, working-class frame and brick housing. In October 2021\, additional documentation was published and the historic district was expanded\, extending the period of significance through 1948. \nThis hour-long tour will highlight both the commercial corridor and residential areas of the Anacostia Historic District\, as well as feature some recent projects made possible by DC’s historic homeowner grant program. Imania Price\, Historic Preservation Specialist for the DC Office of Planning\, will lead the tour. \nThis event has a ticket cost of $10 and space is limited. Register today! \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Walking Tour: Woodley Park Historic District
DESCRIPTION:Woodley Park is a quiet residential oasis alongside the bustling Connecticut Avenue corridor. Named for Philip Barton Key’s Federal-era mansion\, the neighborhood bloomed in the early twentieth century when the Rock Creek ravine was spanned with the “Million Dollar Bridge” (officially named the William Howard Taft bridge). Prominent developer Harry Wardman liked the area so much that he built his own home here\, as well as a hotel and elegant row houses evoking an English Village. Other prominent builders and architects made significant contributions\, including Hunter and Bell\, Middaugh and Shannon\, and Clarke Waggaman. \nOur tour will be led by Martin Murray\, a Woodley Park resident and tour guide with Washington Walks. \nStarting Point: In front of LeadingAge\, 2519 Connecticut Avenue NW (one block south of the Woodley Park metro station). \nThe event has a ticket cost of $10 and space is limited – register today! \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Site Visit/Tour: Anderson House & Museum of American Revolution Institute of Society of the Cincinnati
DESCRIPTION:Anderson House was completed in 1905 as the winter residence of Isabel and Larz Anderson and\, since 1938\, has been the headquarters of the Society of the Cincinnati. Located within the Massachusetts Avenue and Dupont Circle historic districts\, the former residence is complete with grand entertaining spaces inspired by a variety of architectural styles and filled with the many artifacts from the family’s extensive travels. Anderson House was built for social\, political\, and philanthropic events\, welcoming amongst their guests—society notables\, diplomats\, military figures\, and heads of state\, including three U.S. presidents and the King of Siam (Thailand). \nIn 1938\, following the wishes of her late husband Larz (himself a member)\, Isabel donated Anderson House to the Society of the Cincinnati to become its headquarters and museum. The Society is the nation’s oldest patriotic organization founded in the final days of the American Revolutionary War by the American and French officers. Today from Anderson House\, the Society through its American Revolution Institute continues its educational mission to perpetuate the legacy of the American Revolution with its museum and library collections\, public programs\, and educational initiatives. \nThis tour will be led by Paul Newman\, the Museum Collections and Operations Manager for the Society of the Cincinnati and its American Revolution Institute. \nThis event has a ticket cost of $10 and space is limited – register today! \nREGISTER HERE
