Restoring the Heart of Ivy City: Alexander Crummell School (Webinar)

May 10, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:15 pm

Join us on Tuesday, May 10 at 12:00pm EST for a virtual program with Empower DC and Friends of Crummell School about the history and future of the historic Alexander Crummell School

Named after abolitionist and preacher, Reverend Alexander Crummel, this DC landmark served as the elementary school for Black children of Ivy City and Trinidad from 1912 until the early 1970s. Since its closure, neighborhood residents and school alums have advocated to preserve this historic site and secure its use as a public space and community center.

This program will explore the school’s history and its community; the life and legacy of Rev Crummell; the activism to preserve the site; and what the future holds for this important neighborhood landmark.
