SUMMARY:Preservation in Action: A Tour of Dumbarton House
DESCRIPTION:Lower passage stairs in Dumbarton House\, photo taken by museum staff.\nJoin the DC Preservation League and Dumbarton House Museum staff on March 23rd from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM to tour the interior of this restored 19th century home. Dumbarton House is a Federal period historic house museum and the National Headquarters of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America (NSCDA). Built ca. 1799 in Georgetown\, Dumbarton House served as the home to early public officials\, merchants\, and business owners. The tour will begin in the newly renovated Visitor Center\, which features an exhibition on the history and past occupants of the home. Visitors will also explore four period rooms\, which demonstrate both private and public living spaces. The Federal period dining room was just updated this winter and features new\, period accurate wallpaper and a dinnerware set once owned by Eliza Custis Law. \nAbout The NSCDA: The National Society of the Colonial Dames of American (NSCDA)\, a women’s non-profit organization founded in 1891\, actively promotes our national heritage through historic preservation\, patriotic service\, and educational projects. The NSCDA purchased Dumbarton House in 1928 to serve as its national headquarters and for use as an historic house museum. Under the direction of architectural historian Fiske Kimball and architect Horace Peaslee\, Dumbarton House (ca. 1799) was restored to its Federal period appearance (1790-1830). The house opened up to the public in 1932. Today\, the NSCDA owns\, operates\, curates or funds more than ninety sites across the United States. Many of these historic properties form Great American Treasures\, an alliance\, which offers broad and diverse American stories through individual sites across the nation. \n  \nSign up here!\n
