DC Preservation League Members are invited to join us on Saturday, August 28th for in in-person tour of St. Elizabeths East Campus, led by Latrena M. Owens, Executive Director of the District of Columbia’s St. Elizabeths East Campus Redevelopment!

St. Elizabeths Hospital purchased the land that would become the hospital’s East Campus in 1869. The purpose of the additional land was to have more space for the hospital’s agricultural operations. However, as St. Elizabeths  entered the twentieth century it faced a problem of overcrowding. The East Campus, primarily made up of farmland, needed to be used for additional housing. Over the years, the agricultural operations taking place on the East Campus began to gradually dissipate as more patient buildings were constructed on the land. Many of the larger buildings found on the East Campus today reflect evolving ideals of medical treatment during the twentieth century.

In 1987, responsibility over the East Campus was given to the District of Columbia. The campus is currently undergoing redevelopment for a mix of public and private use. The project plans to preserve and adaptively reuse many buildings and landscapes that make this campus an important part of American history, while also serving nearby communities. Learn more here
