Elizabeth Keckly’s Washington (In-Person)

The DC Preservation League invites you to an event celebrating
Elizabeth Keckly’s Washington!
Elizabeth Keckly was a seamstress, businesswoman, philanthropist, and author. Born enslaved in 1818, Keckly eventually moved to Washington, DC in 1860 with her son after purchasing their freedom a few years prior. Her dressmaking business gained a number of prominent clients with the most notable being Mary Lincoln, who would consider Keckly her closest confidante and friend.
While in the nation’s capital, Keckly also helped found organizations to assist formerly enslaved people, including the Contraband Relief Organization and the National Home for Destitute Colored Women and Children. In 1868 she published her memoir Behind the Scenes or Thirty Years a Slave, and Four Years in the White House.
Opening remarks will be given by actress Gloria Reuben, with presentations by author of Mrs. Lincoln and Mrs. Keckly, Jennifer Fleischner, and Historians Sarah Fling and Lina Mann from The White House Historical Association.
COVID Safety Requirements: DCPL requires that all attendees be fully vaccinated. Proof of vaccination with identification is required for entry into this event. Masks are also required for this event, regardless of vaccination status.
