The DC Preservation League (DCPL) understands the importance of innovative history education in the modern world. As a citywide preservation nonprofit, DCPL manages the digital website and mobile application DC Historic Sites, used by educators across the District.
DC Historic Sites is a public website that features over 1,000 historic sites in DC, combining historical descriptions with photographs and digital resources. Each of these landmarks is pulled directly from the DC Inventory of Historic Sites and National Register of Historic Places—the official listings of historic landmarks and districts in the city and country. In addition, DC Historic Sites is home to over 60 thematic tours, with content covering a wide range of cultural, social, and political histories.
History is inherently place-based, and preserved properties serve as incredible teaching tools for students. The tangible past demonstrates history in a unique way for young people, and offers opportunities for experiential learning. For DC students, accessing DC Historic Sites shows them the significance of their neighborhoods, their homes, and their city. The website is an incredible educational tool, and lends itself to essay projects, field trips, and interactive homework. The possibilities are endless!
The DC Preservation League is working on expanding its resources for teachers. There are currently four lesson plans available for DC History and Social Studies Teachers, offering digital scavenger hunts for students to complete in class.
