Walking Tour: Anacostia Historic District

The Anacostia Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978—with approximately 550 buildings comprising the historic district, dating from 1854 to about 1930. This historic district is unique because it preserves the city’s largest and most intact collection of late-19th- and early-20th-century, small-scale, working-class frame and brick housing. In October 2021, additional documentation was published and the historic district was expanded, extending the period of significance through 1948.
This hour-long tour will highlight both the commercial corridor and residential areas of the Anacostia Historic District, as well as feature some recent projects made possible by DC’s historic homeowner grant program. Imania Price, Historic Preservation Specialist for the DC Office of Planning, will lead the tour.
