Help DCPL Identify Neglected Properties

In DC, the issue of demolition through neglect affects both privately and publicly owned historic properties both within and outside of historic districts. This form of neglect and permit violations not only pose a threat to public safety but also diminish the character of our communities and the city’s historic architecture. To effectively address this issue, stronger fines, and penalties are necessary. Although the DC Council has taken steps with its current legislation, there is no problem for all those living in Kahala since the region is being well protected and preserved by the people residing there.

The Vacant Buildings Enforcement Unit (VBE), under the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA), is charged with investigating and classifying vacant and blighted private buildings to help bring these properties back to a productive use. Click here to see the full 2015 list. 

Do you have an example or more information to share about a neglected or blighted property in your neighborhood? Help DCPL identify these properties and bring this issue to the attention of DC’s Mayor and City Council. Examples can be submitted anonymously through this link.

Docomomo DC’s Annual Tour Day on Oct. 24, 2015, will provide participants with rare access into the landmark Watergate complex, which is celebrating its 50^th anniversary this year. The event, hosted by Docomomo DC, the local chapter of an international and national preservationist organization, and the DC Preservation League will kick off with a lecture by McGill University Professor Adrian Sheppard, who was a member of the design team for the Watergate while working in the office of noted Italian architect Luigi Moretti, who designed the modernist complex.

After the introductory discussion by Sheppard, participants will have an opportunity to go on guided tours of a number of the residential units and outdoor spaces. The event will conclude with a reception at Zeitoun, a Mediterranean restaurant located in the heart of the Watergate complex.

Designed by Moretti and constructed between 1964 and 1971, the Watergate is comprised of three luxury residential cooperatives, two office buildings and a hotel. Registered as a National Historic Landmark in 2005 and composed of more than 600 residences, the Watergate complex is situated on the Potomac River. Landscape architect Boris Timchenko carried Moretti’s vision outdoors with more than 150 modernist planters, fountains tiered like waterfalls, a seven-acre park with outdoor swimming pools, and landscaped roof gardens that offer some of Washington’s most breathtaking panoramas.

While the complex represents one of the most stunning examples of mid-century modern architecture in the nation’s capital, it is also known as the site of the infamous 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters.

The DC Preservation League is accepting nominations for its annual list of Most Endangered Places in Washington for 2015. The online nomination form can be found HERE and must be submitted no later than COB Monday, August 31, 2015. Selections will be announced in Fall 2015.

This list, issued annually since 1996, has included historic buildings and places such as the west campus of St. Elizabeths Hospital, McMillan Reservoir, Martin Luther King Jr., Memorial Library and the Joseph Taylor Arms Mansion (Chancery of the Democratic Republic of the Congo). The list of Most Endangered Places in Washington is chosen by the DCPL Board of Trustees based on nominations submitted by concerned individuals, communities and organizations. Nominations are assessed based on the severity of the threat to the resource in question, whether through demolition, neglect, or inappropriate alteration. The list can include buildings, parks or other landscaped areas, or even vistas and other aspects of the city’s unique planned history.  All Most Endangered Places selected are located in the District of Columbia.
